 ——————

Alexander Hamilton remains a controversial figure, lauded by some as a defining figure in US history, and decried by others as a corrupter of its essential nature. He was the country’s first Secretary of the Treasury, and it was under his guidance that the first national bank of the United States was founded, and he laid down the foundation for concepts such as a funded debt, the tax framework, and many other aspects of the nascent country’s financial infrastructure. In his 41 years he was, as the book lists, ‘clerk, college student, youthful poet, essayist, artillery captain, wartime adjutant to [George] Washington, battlefield hero, congressman, abolitionist, Bank of New York founder, state assemblyman, member of the Constitutional Convention and New York Ratifying Convention, orator, lawyer, polemicist, educator, patron saint of New York Evening Post, foreign policy-theorist, and major general in the army.’

He, along with James Madison, was one of the primary architects of the US Constitution. He was also one of the authors of, and a guiding force in, the Federalist, which remains an eloquent justification for a strong central government.

Hamilton was, in addition to all the rest, a habitual writer. His letters and journals offer insight into the life of the time, as well as the lives of the Founding Fathers and the people who ran the early US Government. A comprehensive collection of his writings was published in 27 volumes, and Chernow has drawn heavily on these works in writing the biography. He also used records from a number of places, including England and Hamilton’s birthplace in the Caribbean to develop a comprehensive picture of Hamilton’s life.
